Gang of Youths’ MTV Unplugged album to be released in U.S. before Christmas

With GOY’s Say Yes To Life tour about to resume in Nashville, the good news continues for fans in North America. In addition to this weekend’s airing of the MTV Unplugged show in the U.S. comes the news that the album will be released on December 21, 2018 — just in time to make a perfect, last-minute Christmas gift.

Even better: It’s a combo package with both the 2-LP vinyl and the DVD. Bam!

The release is showing up online already. Amazon.com is taking pre-orders with a $30.98 (USD) price, while Target.com has pre-orders at $27.89. (There’s also a 3-disc listing on Amazon.ca, but it doesn’t have a price or pre-order option as I type this.)

This is cool to see: an MTV airing right before the tour starts in the hopes of drumming up some extra visibility and interest, and then an album/DVD release less than a week after the tour ends in the hopes of taking advantage of the buzz and new fans that’ll surely be made over the two-week tour.

Dave speaks at Labor Party event announcing new music policy

Before Gang of Youths took the stage Friday night for the final show of the Australian Say Yes To Life tour, Dave Le’aupepe spoke in Sydney at a Labor Party event where plans for a new governmental music policy were shared.

His appearance came less than a week after the band announced plans to organize a campaign to kick ticket reseller Viagogo out of Australia. Friday’s event was streamed live on Facebook, and you can watch it below. Dave begins to speak at about the 31:30 mark, and he’s on stage for about 6-7 minutes.

As someone who lives ~8,000 miles away, I’m not going to claim any knowledge of the issues and politics involved. (I’m familiar with ticket resellers, but Viagogo isn’t a big player here in the U.S.) If you’re looking for more on Friday’s event, I’d recommend this article from The Music, which also has a few paragraphs recapping Dave’s speech.

Gang of Youth’s MTV Unplugged to air this weekend in the U.S.

Well this is pretty great news for those of us who

a) call ourselves GOY fans,
b) live in the U.S., and
c) still haven’t seen the MTV Unplugged performance from a few months ago:

The show is going to air this weekend on the MTV Live channel. Here are the times:

  • Saturday (Dec. 1) at 9:00 PM and 12:00 AM ET
  • Monday (Dec. 3) at 10:30 PM ET

Now, before you get too excited, this isn’t the main MTV channel we’re talking about, nor is it MTV2 or even MTV Classic. It’s MTV Live, and your cable/satellite/TV provider may not carry the station. (For example, here at Casa McGee, we pay DirecTV a boatload of money every month for a zillion channels and we don’t get MTV Live. Ugh.)

If the Wikipedia page for MTV Live is correct, you can find the channel here:

  • DirecTV: channel 572
  • Dish Network: channel 369
  • AT&T U-verse: channel 1505
  • Verizon FIOS: channel 715

It may also be available on your local cable network; check your guide or call them or whatever you need to do.

Good luck. I’ll probably be paying DirecTV a little extra this month to get whatever extra package I need for MTV Live. And then canceling right after.
