Gang of Youth’s MTV Unplugged to air this weekend in the U.S.

Well this is pretty great news for those of us who

a) call ourselves GOY fans,
b) live in the U.S., and
c) still haven’t seen the MTV Unplugged performance from a few months ago:

The show is going to air this weekend on the MTV Live channel. Here are the times:

  • Saturday (Dec. 1) at 9:00 PM and 12:00 AM ET
  • Monday (Dec. 3) at 10:30 PM ET

Now, before you get too excited, this isn’t the main MTV channel we’re talking about, nor is it MTV2 or even MTV Classic. It’s MTV Live, and your cable/satellite/TV provider may not carry the station. (For example, here at Casa McGee, we pay DirecTV a boatload of money every month for a zillion channels and we don’t get MTV Live. Ugh.)

If the Wikipedia page for MTV Live is correct, you can find the channel here:

  • DirecTV: channel 572
  • Dish Network: channel 369
  • AT&T U-verse: channel 1505
  • Verizon FIOS: channel 715

It may also be available on your local cable network; check your guide or call them or whatever you need to do.

Good luck. I’ll probably be paying DirecTV a little extra this month to get whatever extra package I need for MTV Live. And then canceling right after.

Gang of Youths confirmed to play Hangout Music Fest 2019

Gang of Youths’ 2019 plans continue to take shape. The band is now up to three confirmed festival appearances with today’s announcement that they’re playing at Hangout Music Fest 2019.

The festival will take place from May 17-19 in Gulf Shores, Alabama — making it the first confirmed U.S. appearance for GOY next year. I can’t find anything on the festival’s web site indicating which day GOY will be on stage.

Tickets go on sale next Tuesday, December 4.

There are two other confirmed festival appearances on the band’s 2019 itinerary: Sziget Festival in Budapest and Cruilla Barcelona in Spain. We’re tracking all upcoming Gang of Youths concerts right here on Deepest Sighs.

Dave talks about new Gang of Youths album with Zane Lowe

(This post has been updated from its original version with new quotes and details after we listened to the entire conversation on Beats 1.)

Dave did a co-hosting spot today with Zane Lowe on Apple’s Beats 1 streaming service, a show that played out as a relaxed conversation inside Sydney’s Enmore Theatre before a recent GOY gig.

During the show, Dave revealed that he has a name and some concepts for the next Gang of Youths album, and he wants to finish the album in 2019:

“There’s gonna be something. I’ve got everything conceptually with the album, including a name, but not necessarily songs. I don’t want to stagnate, though. I think that’s the other thing that like — I kind of want to at least get this third album done by next year. That’s really fucking important to me.”

– Dave L. to Zane Lowe

Dave wouldn’t give away the album name while the cameras were rolling, but did say he’d tell Zane off-camera. He also explained, “I always come up with the name first.” You can hear that in this video:

During the hour-long guest hosting appearance, Dave also hinted that he won’t shy away from continuing to write candidly about the real-life themes that have marked the band’s first two albums:

For me, there’s never going to be any shortage of things that people I feel like might need to hear. I think these are universal kind of bonding experiences and things that feel real and … these universally intrepid adventures, right, that all of us can relate to — be it tragic or elated — there’s never going to be any shortage of that. And I think kind of what I want from my life is to try and interpret those things in really beautiful ways. Whether it’s in a band, or like … y’know, eventually behind the scenes in some way, like that’s kind of what I want to do.

That mention of “behind the scenes” is mirrored in this second tweet/video, where Dave says  that he’d like to produce other artists someday. See/hear that below:

So to sum up … great news: Dave (and the band) at least have concepts/ideas and a name for their next album, and he wants it done in 2019!
