Dave talks about new Gang of Youths album with Zane Lowe

(This post has been updated from its original version with new quotes and details after we listened to the entire conversation on Beats 1.)

Dave did a co-hosting spot today with Zane Lowe on Apple’s Beats 1 streaming service, a show that played out as a relaxed conversation inside Sydney’s Enmore Theatre before a recent GOY gig.

During the show, Dave revealed that he has a name and some concepts for the next Gang of Youths album, and he wants to finish the album in 2019:

“There’s gonna be something. I’ve got everything conceptually with the album, including a name, but not necessarily songs. I don’t want to stagnate, though. I think that’s the other thing that like — I kind of want to at least get this third album done by next year. That’s really fucking important to me.”

Dave wouldn’t give away the album name while the cameras were rolling, but did say he’d tell Zane off-camera. He also explained, “I always come up with the name first.” You can hear that in this video:

During the hour-long guest hosting appearance, Dave also hinted that he won’t shy away from continuing to write candidly about the real-life themes that have marked the band’s first two albums:

For me, there’s never going to be any shortage of things that people I feel like might need to hear. I think these are universal kind of bonding experiences and things that feel real and … these universally intrepid adventures, right, that all of us can relate to — be it tragic or elated — there’s never going to be any shortage of that. And I think kind of what I want from my life is to try and interpret those things in really beautiful ways. Whether it’s in a band, or like … y’know, eventually behind the scenes in some way, like that’s kind of what I want to do.

That mention of “behind the scenes” is mirrored in this second tweet/video, where Dave says  that he’d like to produce other artists someday. See/hear that below:

So to sum up … great news: Dave (and the band) at least have concepts/ideas and a name for their next album, and he wants it done in 2019!
