The list of upcoming Gang of Youths gigs continues to get shorter.
On Wednesday, organizers of the Rock Werchter festival confirmed their event’s cancellation due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It’s the latest in a string of now-canceled or postponed shows that Gang of Youths was scheduled to play.
The festival’s statement says that Belgium’s National Security Council has banned large gatherings in the country through the month of August. Rock Werchter would’ve taken place July 2-5, and Gang of Youths was scheduled to perform on July 3.
Remarkably, the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals scheduled for the first weekend of June in Germany have not (yet?) been canceled. But that seems like a foregone conclusion at this point — a matter of when, not if.
Assuming that festival is also canceled, the next scheduled Gang of Youths concert will be the Neighbourhood Weekender festival in England on September 5. That one has been postponed from its original dates of May 23-24.
And related to all of this, it seems safe to assume that the current health crisis is also going to force Gang of Youths and Warner Music to hold on to the band’s new album until it can be released and have a proper promotional push behind it. There’s never been any official word on a release date, but we heard lots of underground rumblings that the original target was March/April/May.
